Using Rapidly

Post-download rules

Move, sort, extract or notify when a download finishes, and why a program is never run without your say.

A rule has a condition (for example "the file is a video" or "the link comes from this site") and one or more steps.

What a rule can do

  • Move the file to a folder. Rapidly copies the verified file first and removes the original only after the copy was checked. The folder can use {category}, {yyyy} and {mm}.
  • Extract an archive into its own sub-folder. Zip, tar, gz, bz2 and xz are unpacked with the tar program that comes with Windows; 7z and rar need 7-Zip to be installed.
  • Notify you with a message in the Notification Center.
  • Run a program you choose, with the file as input.

A rule applies to files that match its extension, category or type. A rule with no condition matches nothing, so it can never act on everything by accident.

Running a program

Warning: Downloaded files are never run automatically. A rule can run a program only if you chose that program yourself in the file chooser.

When you choose the program, Rapidly records its path and its SHA-256. Before every run it checks that the program is still the same file. If the program changed, the step does not run and you are told. The page of the app cannot create such a step on its own; it can only come from your choice in the file chooser.

Order and safety

Steps run in the order shown. If a step fails, the later steps do not run and the file stays where it is. Every step and its result is written to the download's timeline, so you can see what happened.
